I have heard a lot about organic gardening but I can't really get my head around it. What about a summary - What do you think the main principles of organic growing are?

Organic gardening is a form of horticulture that concentrates on care for the soil using the following natural methods rather than artifically enriching it with synhthetic fertilizers and use of herbicides:

  • Home Composting
  • Use of green manures

It encourages us to control weeds as follows rather then using chemical herbicides (weedkillers).

  • Mulching around plans and between rows
  • Mechanical cultivation*

It stresses the need to control and discourage pests using the following methods rather than using genetically modified crops and synthetic pesticides:

  • Crop rotation
  • biological pest control
  • Organically approved pesticides in some cases
  • companion planting

It generally relies on the balance of nature to keep things healthy and interferes with this as little as possible.
