I was given some "Heritage" onions by an friend some years ago. They send up new small onions at the top of the plant which either fall over or taken off and planted. Whenever I dig the parent plant which seems to increase in size I have clumps of small onions too large to be considered "green onions" yet to small to be considered good for cooking. `

Any guidance would be appreciated.

I live in northeast PA. I planted a crepe myrtle last fall. This is the first spring and at first I thought it was dead (no leaves until May 5th), but now it does have some leaves though only on sporadic branches, while most are still brown sticks.

Should I prune the dead limbs and spent flowers from last year? The growth is mainly from the bottom of the tree, with the top branches still appearing dead.

If anyone can help, I'd really appreciate it. I fell in love with this tree while on vacation in New Jersey and was told it probably wouldn't grow in northeast PA, but I planted it in a protected, south-facing spot in my yard and am hoping for the best.

Thanks,

We had 3 wooden compost bins made this year (before this we just had a compost heap)We only compost raw vegetable waste as well as tea bags and grass cuttings as well as garden cuttings.these compost bins do not have a solid bottom or lids.My husband saw 3 rats in the bin that is being added to at the moment they disappeared down into the compost so we think they are nesting in it.We have stone walls between us and an empty old house next door. What do we do?

http://organicgreenfingers.com/questions/243/moles-in-the-gardenMoles in the gardenCiaran De Buitlear2010-04-29T20:04:46Z2010-08-20T16:24:16Z

A friend who lives in the eastern part of Germany has a mole problem and asked me this question so here it is. The moles moved in last year - there are molehills on the lawn and the mice have started using the mole tunnels and eating the roots of plants. He has tried putting soap down the holes but they just move on to another part of the garden. The cat is too lazy or actually likes the moles so id having no effect. He would rather not kill the moles but would like to get rid of them. Any ideas?

http://organicgreenfingers.com/questions/297/are-you-interested-in-keeping-this-site-goingAre you interested in keeping this site going?Ciaran De Buitlear2010-08-02T20:42:01Z2010-08-02T20:42:01Z

I think the site has done ok and there is some good content here but it never got the critical mass to get to the desired level of activity where questions were asked regularly and answered quickly so that a large body of information got created. This is mainly due to my lack of funds for promotion of the site... I am setting up a new version, this will be a community owned and run site with the same theme as organicgreenfingers.com. organicgreenfingers.com will still be around for a while but my efforts will be going into the new site. This new site needs people to "commit" to using it before it gets going. This is one way of ensuring it gets that critical mass. The site will be backed by the stackexchange people.

I recently planted courgette, cucumber and cauliflower under a polythene grow tunnel in a raised bed. They're doing well from what I can see but how do I water them? Is it enough to water the raised bed and trust them to get water through the soil (which is what I've been doing) or do I need to water within the tunnel itself?
